Science Test Genteics Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a Homozygous organism?
An organism that has the same alleles for a trait.
What does Genotype refer to?
The genetic makeup of an organism; the alleles it has.
What is a Dominant allele?
An allele that is always expressed when present.
Examples include RR and Rr.
What is a Phenotype?
The physical characteristics of an organism.
What is a Gene?
A segment of DNA.
What does Heterozygous mean?
An organism has different alleles for a trait.
What is an Allele?
Different versions of the same gene received from each parent, represented by uppercase and lowercase letters.
What is a Recessive allele?
An allele that is expressed when two of the same are present and are always lowercase.
Example: rr.
What is Codominance?
When both alleles are dominant and present in an organism.
What is Incomplete dominance?
When one allele is not completely dominant over the other, creating a whole new phenotype.
