(27 cards)
What is Science?
The study of the natural world around us
What are the main 3 types of science?
Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
Why is Science important?
It helps us solve problems, in innovation, and improves the quality of life
Who are scientists?
They are people who study the natural world and seek to understand how everything works.
What did Isaac Newton discover?
Gravity and the laws of motion
What did Marie Curie discover?
the elements of polonium, radium, and radioactivity
What did Charles Darwin discover?
The theory of evolution by natural selection
What did Rosalind Franklin discover?
DNA, and X-ray crystallography
What did Professor Joseph Borg do research on?
genetic blood condition called Thalassaemia
Which Maltese scientist specialised in genetics and molecular biology?
Professor Rena Balzan
What did Sir Temi Zammit do?
He was an archeologist, professor of chemistry, medical doctor, researcher, and writer. He discovered contaminated milk and undulant fever (deni irqiq)
Proper lab clothing is…
lab coats, aprons, safety goggles, gloves, tie back long hair
Can we eat and drink in the labs?
No
How do we use chemicals?
Handle carefully and make sure all chemical containers are properly labelled
How do we use equipment properly?
Know how to use it, be gentle, and turn them off when not in use
How do you keep your work space?
Clean and organised
What do we do to glass?
handle it with care
where do we dispose of waste?
Chemical disposal and waste bins
what is a test tube?
a small cylindrical glass container with an open top, used to hold, mix, or heat. small amounts of liquids in laboratories
what is a stand designed to hold multiple test tubes upright, is typically made of plastic and wood and it keeps the test tubes organized and stable.
test tube rack
what is a test tube holder?
a tool used to hold test tubes when they are hot or need to be moved
what is a beaker?
a cylindrical glass container with a flat bottom with a spout for pouring. Beakers are often used for stirring, mixing and heating liquids.
what is a flask?
a glass container with a narrow neck and a broad, flat base, typically used to mix or heat liquids
what is a pipette?
a slender tube used to transfer or measure out small quantities of liquid
