Science Unit 3 Topic 1-3 Flashcards
(21 cards)
How do you use Heat in your daily activities? (4 or more)
-Food, clothing, forging metal, keeping warm.
What are 3 basic needs that is use for heat?
-Keeping warm, shelter, and food.
How did technology improved how we use heat to accomplish tasks?
- Cook = Stove
- Stay warm = Furnaces
- Laundry = Machines/electrical appliances
Describe how technology has improved how we use heat in those ways.
- Stay warm: Find dry wood and make a fire, use animal fur. (Furnaces)
- Cook: Hunt animals and cook them up in the fire. (electrical/mechanical stove)
- Laundry: Boil water, and use it to clean the clothes, and to dry it, put it on top of the fire from the smoke. (Mechanical/electrical machines)
What is the difference of thermal energy, temperature and heat?
- Heat = Transfer of energy.
- Temperature = Average energy.
- Thermal energy = Total energy.
What units do we use to measure temperature?
- Celsius, Kelvins, sometimes Fahrenheit. (U.S)
What units do we use to measure temperature?
- Celsius, Kelvins, sometimes Fahrenheit. (U.S)
What is the relationship between temperature and thermal energy?
Temperature: Is a measure of average thermal energy.
Thermal energy: Is the total energy in a substance.
What is temperature?
Measures energy of movement or kinetic energy.
What is temperature?
Measures energy of movement or kinetic energy.
What tool do we use to measure temperature?
Thermometer.
Fahrenheit:
Based on ___________
H20 freezes = ?
H20 boils = ?
Based on (BODY TEMPERATURE) H20 freezes = 32 Fahrenheit H20 boils = 212 Fahrenheit
Celsius: Based on \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ H20 freezes = ? H20 boils = ? Body temperature = ?
Based on (PROPERTIES OF WATER) H20 freezes = 0 degrees Celsius H20 boils = 100 degrees Celsius Body temperature = 32 degrees Celsius
Kelvin:
Based on ___________ (Theoretical value where all motion stops)
H20 freezes = ?
h20 boils = ?
Based on (ABSOLUTE ZERO) H20 freezes = 273 k H20 boils = 373 k
What do you need to know?
k-273 = degrees Celsius.
what is a bimetallic strip?
Made of two different metals together.
Used in thermostats in home
What is a recording thermometer and a infrared thermogram?
RT: Bimetallic strip connected to a writing device and paper that records temperature functions over time.
IT: Record in a heat sensor (Infrared radiation) as a different colours according to the temperature.
What is kinetic energy?
Energy that a particle possesses by being in motion.
What are the 3 states of Matter?
- Solid, liquid, Gas.
Order the liquid, solid, and gas to the least to greatest of kinetic energy.
- Solid (Not much kinetic energy)
- Liquid (Some kinetic energy)
- Gas (Most kinetic energy)
Name 4 of the particle model matter.
- The particles are much too small to be seen.
- The particles are always in motion.
- They vibrate, rotate, (In liquids and gas) move from place to place.
- Particles have empty spaces between them.
