Unit 4 Structures and Forces: topic 1-3 Flashcards
(26 cards)
Define Origin.
Where they came from/ where it started.
define natural structure.
found in nature, living, non-living or dead.
define manufactured structure.
made by people/ man-made
define design (form).
How it was built.
What is Mass/Solid structures?
Piling or putting similar materials into a particular shape/design.
what are some examples of mass structures?
Concrete, brick walls, beaver dam, bread, sculptures.
What are some features about mass/solid structures?
- Solid pieces of strong material.
- little/ no space inside.
- very strong
- held in place by weight
What are some advantages and disadvantages of mass/solid structures?
ADVANTAGE: stays together, solid, strong, holds down own mass, removing a section will not ruin it.
DISADVANTAGE: Can’t be transported, it could contract/expand, very heavy, hard to build, ground could buckle underneath.
What is Frame structures?
A skeleton of materials that supports the weight of other parts.
What are some examples of Frame structures?
Ladder, snow shoes, spiderwebs, wheelchair, a fence.
What are some features about Frame structures?
-Rigid (does not bend)
-parts fastened together
-strength from the pieces fit together
-empty space inside
underneath other materials
What are some advantages and disadvantages of Frame structures.
ADVANTAGES: strong, inexpensive, supports other parts, is the important part for aesthetic structure.
DISADVANTAGES: tall frames are unstable, one missing piece can affect strength, needs to be anchored, hard to make.
What is Shell structures?
Thin, solid outer layer/ surface with hollow inner area.
What are some examples of shell structures?
parachute, milk carton, balloon, soccer ball, igloo.
What are some features about shell structures?
- One continuous piece of material
- no internal frame
- lighter than solid structures
- stronger than frame structures
- uses very little materials
What are some advantages and disadvantages of shell structures?
ADVANTAGE: strong, hollow, make use of efficient shape, light, no support required, little.
DISADVANTAGE: Natural disaster, harder to build, tiny weakness can cause structural failure.
Define function.
what the structure, will be used for.
What is the purpose of function?
Function is the FIRST THING you must consider when designing.
Define Aesthetic.
The beauty of an object what makes things aesthetically pleasing.
What does Aesthetic show?
- symmetrical shapes
- method of construction
- interesting texture/colour
- shapes that are repeated/carefully arranged
Why do structures vary in design?
culture, traditions, economics, climate, technology, availability of materials, portability.
What is the Margin of Safety?
The limits in which a structure is expected to perform its function SAFELY.
What is an example of margin of safety?
speed limits, load requirements.
What are the environmental factors? (2)
1) Climate change
2) Terrain conditions
