Scientific Method Flashcards
(29 cards)
Gel electrophoresis
A test to compare DNA. DNA is cut w/ enzymes then placed with well. Small fragments fall into wells. The small fragments fall to the bottom while the large fragments stay on top.
Chromatography
A test to separate pigments (color).
Indicator
A chemical that changes color with another chemical. Ex: iodine= amber
Iodine+starch= blue-black
Control. (Group)
“Normal” condition
W/ medicine studies = placebo
Used for comparison
Dependent variable
What we measure to answer your research question. Put on y axis. “Amt. of” “rate of”
Hypothesis
Educated prediction
If, then statement
Independent variable
One per experiment
One factor that u changed
“Type of”
Placebo
“Sugar pill”
Used in the control group in medicine studies.
-saline shot or sugar pill
Sample size
Large group of test subjects
Must have a large sample size to get accurate data
-reduces the size of individual data
Theory
A hypothesis that has supported many many many times.
Similar to a law but more complex understanding.
Compound light microscope
Magnifies small see through cells.
Dichotomous key
A chart with two options per level, used to compare DNA or classify organisms
Dissection
To examine dead specimens
Graduated cylinder
Used to measur the volume of a Liquid. (Always read bottom of the liquid)
Magnification
Make the view of an object larger.
Mass
Amount of matter
Metric ruler
A tool used to measure length in metric units.
Model
A larger representation of something that is difficult to see otherwise.
Stain
Chemical put on specimens and is used to better the view of the specimens under a microscope.
Triple beam balance
A scale used to find the weight of an object in grams.
Volume
The amount of space an object uses.
Conclusion
Decision made asked on the results.
Controlled experiment
Experiment where the only difference between the groups is made on purpose to find data.
Data
Information gathered from an experiment.
