What are the 2 subcategories of scleroderma? Where do they affect?

A

Diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis = affects multiple systems

Limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis = affects fewer organs sparing the kidneys and skin on trunk and proximal limbs

What are the features of limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis? (5)

A

CREST

• Calcinosis (hard, calcified nodules under the skin)
• Raynaud’s phenomenon
• Esophageal dysmotility (food gets stuck on swallowing, causing discomfort)
• Sclerodactyly (tightening and thickening of skin over the fingers distal to MCP joints)
• Telangiectasia (prominent dilated capillaries, particularly on the cheeks)
