Sea Coasts Flashcards
(9 cards)
What does the height and strength of waves depend on?
Length: the time the wind is blowing for.
Fetch: the distance the waves had travelled before it reaches land.
Strength: the strength of the wind.
Swash meaning
The white foamy water that flows up the beach is called the swash.
Backwash:
When the water runs out of speed it stops and it flows back down the beach into the sea. This is called backwash.
Constructive waves
A strong swash that pushes sand and stones onto the shore.
Destructive waves
They erode the coastline. They are strong tall waves that plunge deeply onto the shore.
They can drag stones, sand and people into the water but their swash is weak
Sea erosion
They damage cliffs, headlands, and remove sand. They damage farms.
Long shore drift:
Remove sand from beaches, sand bars and sand spits by swash and backwash, often blocking entrances to harbours and destroying beaches.
Deposition
Block bays and silt clog up harbours and bays, causing lagoons to form with marshland causing farmlands and roads to flood.
Air compression:
When the waves hit land, air is forces to tiny cracks in rock. Constant explosive pressure and then re;lease of air as the waves fall away weakens rock and breaks into pieces.
