Sea level landforms Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are submergent coastlines?
Areas of the coast which have fallen below the present sea level
What are emergent coastlines?
Areas of the coast which have risen above the present sea level
What are rias?
Submerged river valleys
How are rias formed?
The lowest part of the river’s course and the floodplains alongside the river may be completely drowned but the higher land remains exposed
Give examples of a ria?
Kingsbridge, Devon, UK
Sydney, Australia
What are fjords?
Submerged glacial valleys
How are fjords formed?
When rising sea levels flood deep glacial valleys to create natural inlets and harbours (water reaches up to 1000m deep)
Give an example of a fjord?
Hardangerfjord, Norway
What is a Dalmatian coastline?
Valleys running parallel to the coast become flooded as a result of sea level change. This leaves a series of narrow, long and rugged islands
Give an example of a Dalmatian coastline?
Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
How is a raised beach formed?
- wave quarrying and corrasion undercut the cliff = wave cut notch
- erosion continues = wave cut platform
- overtime, abandoned wave cut notch with rounded stones gets removed by waves
- as weight is lifted, land is uplifted
- overtime creates a raised beach
Give an example of a raised beach?
King’s Cave, Isle of Arran, Scotland
