Sustainable integrated approaches Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are SMPs?
Defra produces Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) to reduce erosion and flooding
Each SMP is linked to a sediment cell
What are the 4 Defra SMP criterias?
- Hold the line
- Advance the line
- Managed retreat/strategic realignment
- Do nothing
What is do nothing?
Letting nature take its course and allowing the sea to erode cliffs and flood low-lying land and allowing existing defences to collapse
What is hold the line?
Maintaining the current position of the coastline (often hard engineering)
What is managed retreat/strategic realignment?
Allowing the coastline to retreat in a managed way
What is advance the line?
Extending the coastline out to sea (often soft engineering)
What does it aim to do?
Establish sustainable levels of economic and social activity in coastal areas while protecting the coastal environment
It takes a holistic view
What is an ICZM?
Integrated coastal zone management
Key facts about the Mediterranean?
- includes over 20 countries from 3 continents
- resident population 300 mil +
- coastline = 45, 000 km long
- 600 cities along the coast
Give 3 pressures on the Mediterranean coastline?
- increased levels of sea pollution
- water shortages due to increases in demand and CC
- increased urbanisation of coastal areas
Who came up with the Mediterranean Blue Plan and when?
UNEP in 2006
What recommendations did it make?
To clean up the Mediterranean by 2020
Give two examples of the recommendations involved?
- treat all waste water before its pumped into the sea
- develop inland tourism to relieve pressure on the coast
