Sec a and b Flashcards
(34 cards)
What are the characteristics of living organisms?
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition (MRS GREN)
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which green plants use sunlight to make food from carbon dioxide and water.
What are the levels of organization in living things?
Cells → Tissues → Organs → Systems → Organism
What is an ecosystem?
A community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
What is a habitat?
The natural home or environment of an organism.
What is respiration?
The process of breaking down glucose to release energy.
What are the two types of respiration?
Aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen).
Why is diffusion important?
It allows the movement of substances like oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of cells.
What are the main nutrients needed by the body?
Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, water, and fiber.
What is the function of the circulatory system?
To transport oxygen, nutrients, and waste throughout the body.
What are the components of blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
What is the function of red blood cells?
To carry oxygen using hemoglobin.
What is the function of platelets?
To help blood clot.
What is the function of the heart?
To pump blood throughout the body.
What is the function of arteries?
To carry blood away from the heart.
What is the function of veins?
To carry blood to the heart.
What is the function of capillaries?
To allow exchange of gases and nutrients between blood and tissues.
What is excretion?
The removal of metabolic waste from the body.
What organs are involved in excretion?
Kidneys, lungs, and skin.
What is the role of the kidney?
To filter blood and form urine.
What is ultrafiltration?
The process where small molecules are filtered from the blood into the nephron.
What is selective reabsorption?
The reabsorption of useful substances like glucose and some water from the filtrate.
What is the role of ADH?
To regulate water balance by increasing water reabsorption in the kidneys.
What is the function of the skeleton?
Support, protection, movement, and production of blood cells.
