SECOND FORM GEOGRAPHY (Depositional landforms) Flashcards
(7 cards)
In order for deposition to occur waves need to loose their _______
Energy
What are some circumstances when waves would loose their energy and when deposition would occur
Low wind speeds, sudden change in direction/ shape of coastline
Characteristics of beaches
Long, flat, small sediment, wide.
Characteristics of a Spit
Long, thin, sand on the edges, vegetation on the other parts, curved.
What is a bar
A spit that joins two headlands to create a lagoon
Characteristics of sand dunes
Low mounds of sand, some vegetation
What is a salt marsh
Salt marshes may be formed behind a spit. The zone behind a spit becomes a sheltered area. Water movement slows down and so more material is deposited. Deposition may form a salt marsh.
