Section 1 - Oceans Flashcards
(25 cards)
What does Soluble mean?
Soluble means that the item/substance is dissolvable/can be dissolved.
What does Insoluble mean?
Insoluble means that the item/substance is not dissolvable/can not be dissolved.
What does Solution mean?
A solution is a mixture of 2 or more substances where on substance dissolves another substance.
What is residue?
A solid, or insoluble material, remains after a process like filtration, distillation, evaporation, or a chemical reaction. (Flash cards made for distillation etc.)
What does filtration mean?
In chemistry, filtration is a process used to separate solids from liquids or gases using a filter medium that allows the fluid to pass through while retaining the solid particles.
What does it mean to evaporate something?
In chemistry, evaporation refers to the process by which a liquid transforms into a gas, typically through the application of heat or as a result of increased temperature.
What does crystallisation mean?
In chemistry, crystallization is the process where atoms or molecules arrange themselves into a highly ordered, rigid structure called a crystal.
What are the changes in state?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
What are the particle diagrams of solid liquid gas and mixtures/pure substances
Solids: All bunched together, still and closed.
Liquid: All are like how liquid would act, not in a fixed place and can move around.
Gas: Moves around at very high speeds, not close to each other.
How do you separate salt and sand?
To separate salt and sand, dissolve the salt in water, then filter the mixture to remove the sand. Finally, evaporate the water from the solution to recover the salt.
What is simple distillation and how do you do it?
Simple distillation is a separation technique that utilizes evaporation and condensation to separate a liquid from a mixture, typically a solvent from a solute.
What transfers more energy, water or air.
Water transfers energy more effectively than air
What are the relative densities of hot and cold water?
Hot water has a lower density then cold water.
How much (roughly, in percent) of C02 is released by humans is absorbed by the ocean.
30-40% of CO2 released by humans is absorbed by the ocean
What is the acid that C02 forms when it dissolves in the acid, the strength of the acid, and what effects does it have on the ocean?
CO2 forms a weak acid (carbonic acid) when it dissolves in the ocean, this reduces the pH of the ocean and is impacting the organisms that live there
What is a independent variable?
The variable that is being changed
What is a dependent variable?
The variable that is tested or measured
What is a control variable?
A factor to balance out the experiment, make it fair, the factor you do not change.
Where do plastics come from?
Plastics come from oil.
How are plastics made?
Plastics are made by reacting monomers to form polymers
What happens to thermoplastics when heated?
Thermoplastics soften when heated.
How are thermosets formed and what happens when heated?
Thermosets are formed by crosslinking and do not soften when heated
Are plastics biodegradable?
Plastics are not biodegradable
What is being used for an alternative to plastic?
Starch polymers are being used as an alternative
