Section 2 - Atmosphere Flashcards
(11 cards)
Define Element
A substance made of only one type of atom.
Define Compound
A substance made of two or more types of atom chemically joined in a fixed ratio.
Define Mixture
A substance made of two or more elements not chemically joined and in a ratio that is not fixed/in a ratio that varies.
What is the composition of the early atmosphere.
Mostly CO2, some water, nitrogen, ammonia and methane.
What is the test for H2 (Hydrogen)?
A lit splint will make a squeaky pop sound if hydrogen is present. This is called the squeaky pop test.
What is the test for C02 (Carbon Dioxide)
The test for carbon dioxide is bubbling carbon dioxide into limewater until it turns cloudy. If it turns cloudy that means carbon dioxide is present. This is called the limewater test.
What is the test for O2 (Oxygen)
The test for oxygen is a glowing splint relights if oxygen is present.
What are the 5 layers of the atmosphere, starting from the closest to the earth to the farthest.
1) Troposphere
2) Stratosphere
3) Mesosphere
4) thermosphere
5) exosphere
What is the ozone layer and where is it found?
The ozone layer is found in the Stratosphere and protects the earth from harsh UV rays which can lead to many different problems.
What are greenhouse gasses?
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are gases in the atmosphere that trap heat, contributing to the greenhouse effect and warming the planet.
What is climate change?
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in average weather patterns, such as temperature and rainfall, over several decades or longer
