Q

What is the role of pujaris in a mandir?

A

Each mandir will have a pujari, or a group of them, depending on the community’s size. They will perform daily ceremonies in the mandir but may also lead puja in the homes of members of the congregation. Their main duties are to offer puja to the gods and to take care of the mandirs and their upkeep. They are responsible for the inner sanctuary and organising religious education. They are authorities on the gods and act as go-betweens.

Q

Which reasons support the fact that more women should not be allowed to become pujaris?

A

It could be argued that allowing women to become pujaris is against the longstanding Hindu tradition so this concept is less accepted amongst more conservative communities. There is also a problem surrounding performing rituals for the congregation during periods of mensuration.
