What is the Spanish armada
A
a Spanish naval invasion force sent against England in 1588 by Philip II of Spain. It was defeated by the English fleet and almost completely destroyed by storms off the Hebrides.

A
Philip II wanted to invade England to avenge the country for its execution of Mary Queen of Scots – Spain’s Catholic ally – in 1587.
