Question 1

Describe the significant lighting change at the start of the section?

Answer 1

-lighting begins dim then goes to complete darkness as Larbi steps into the box and descends down. There is one bright white spotlight on Larbi in the box DSR, but the rest of the stage is filled with darkness.
-this is to show how isolated Larbi felt and how consumed he was with this pressure created from the success of the zero degrees tour

Question 2

Describe a movement that Larbi does in the box and give the interpretation

Answer 2

-he first steps into the box which is positioned DSR upturned, and he walks getting lower on every step he takes to the other side of the box.
-it looks like he is walking down a staircase, but shows his mental, physical and creative decline. He is sinking deeper into his own thoughts, but is also a humorous movement for the audience

Describe another movement Larbi does in the box and give the interpretation

Answer 3

-Larbi paces up and down the box then steps one leg out but is unable to step the other one out. He walks around the outside of the box with one leg still in the box then quickly runs up the side of the box before getting pulled back by his own foot.
-you can see Larbi feels stressed, but he is unable to escape his problems because he created them for himself, so he must stand up to them and live up to his expectations

Give another movement that Larbi does whilst inside the box and give the interpretation

Answer 4

-Larbi is on his knees inside of the box facing SR and he hinges himself backwards disappearing out of sight inside the box, then lifts back up to reappear, before disappearing backwards again, with his arms reaching out in front of him.
-he looks like he is drowning in his own thoughts and is reaching for help, looks like his last breath gasping for air.

What is the physical setting for this section, including formation of boxes, costume, lighting etc

Answer 5

-the focus for the section is on the one upturned metal box positioned DSR as Larbi is the only dancer in this section. The rest of the boxes remain in their position that they were in for Forest but in the dark

-costume Larbi is still wearing the same grey trousers but now has a black blazer over the top = still shows him as a westerner/ foreigner but apart of the monks temple as well

-lighting is pitch black across the whole stage except for the one spotlight on Larbi’s box DSR allowing him to be seen and for the focus to be drawn here

What key themes and starting points are seen in this section?

Answer 6

-contradictions and juxtaposition with the mind and body = Larbi wants to escape the pressures of the western world but he is unable to physically get out of the box because he was the one who created them so they will always be there
-freedom and containment = Larbi wants to be free as he tries to escape the box but he is contained by his one foot still in the box
-Larbi’s journey to the temple to sought solace and partially escape the pressures of the western world whilst he recharges
