the process of society becoming less closely linked with religious values
the rise of secularism and secularisation
the UK was a christian country as institutions such as schools had christian principles. the UK Is undergoing secularisation as in 2015 a survey stated it was the sixth least religious country in the world, 12% of british people surveyed in 2019 claim to be members of the church of england and 52% of people said they have no religion, 70% of 16-29 year olds said they have no religion. by 2050 projections suggest the churchs attendance will drop to 900,000 whilst other religions will increase
what are reasons for secularisation
the need for neutrality, there should be no one belief system that has an advantage over others
freedom of choice-a basic human right is our ability to have freedom of expression both of religion and in rejecting it
discrimination- in a secular society theres less of a chance of discrimination
social cohesion-not labelling someone as a christian or atheist child would lead to society to look beyond differences and seek common goals
avoidance of conflicts- such as the manchester arena attack that came from exteremist religion views will be avoided with secularisation
examples of other countries- secularism works elsewhere in countries such as the US
FREUDS VIEW ON RELIGION
FREUD Believes society needs to grow up and develop rationally and in doing so it must abolish religion.
freud thought in the early stages of development of the mind when we are young we develop psychosexually. neurosis can be explained by understanding people are stuck in or regressing to the psychosexual stages. he developed the idea of the odepius complex where the child has an unconscious sexual desire for the mum and hatred of the parent for the dad. guilt about these feelings are repressed and the repression leads to neurosis.
when someone regresses or is stuck in an infantile phase theyre more in tune with this repressed guilt and this can be shown in ritualistic ways of trying to deal with the guilt, people create rituals they use to try feel better about themselves. men beg for forgiveness from their father and as religion has developed from society, its developed instituions that beg for forgiveness from the ultimate father figure such as practices of confession
freud believed religion was an illusion that came from the desire of people to gain forgiveness for feelings that they had repressed. the widespread aspect of religion led to freud to call religion a universal obsession neurosis. religion had its place in earlier society where it served to be calm humanitys tendency to violence but in modern civilisation. freud said immoriality no less than morality has found its all time support in religion. because of this freud rejected it.
freud believed religion was the unconscious minds need for wish fulfilment as people try use it to move away from repressed guilt
