Rasmussen’s encephalitis

Background

  • Inflammation to one cerebral hemisphere
  • Due to chronic viral infection or autoimmune gainst glutamate receptors
  • Children

Clinical features

  • Simple or complex partial seizures

Imaging

  • Hyperintensity to one cerebral hemisphere

Treatment

  • Glucocorticoids
  • IVIG
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Hemispherectomy for seizures

Background

  • Inflammatory disorder of limbic system
  • Viral infection (herpes) or autoimmune (paraneoplsatic vs. non-paraneoplastic)

Clinical features

  • Memory loss, personality changes, psychiatric symptoms, involuntary movements, seizures

Imaging

  • Hyperintense hippocampi

Treatment

  • Steroids
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Removal of tumor
