Select Commities Flashcards
(6 cards)
Select committees:
KU: they work to report on different aspects of government things like departments and economic affairs
they do surveys and get information from the public to hold the government to account
A: important because the govt must respond to the reports within 60 days. Eg
in 2022 the Home Secretary admitted they had failed to control the issue of migrants crossing the English Channel and promised to fix it.
KU: it’s not very good at holding the govt to account though since the govt doesn’t need to act upon the recommendations that they’ve been given
A: Important because it means that they’re not entirely good at working. Eg
in 2023 they rejected five recommendations from a women and equalities committee report.
E: not really effective since even though the govt has to respond
they don’t actually need to take the recommendations. Meaning it’s sometimes all for nothing.
