Voting And Debating Flashcards
(6 cards)
Voting and debating:
KU: explain that the govt can be held to account via voting
but it doesn’t work very well because if the govt has a large majority they’ll usually win the votes anyway. Eg
A: important because it limits scrutiny since it’s difficult to persuade loads of govt MPs to vote against their party
so it’s not a good way of telling the govt their idea is bad or failing.
KU: a split opposition is when the opposition to the leading party is made up of many different political parties
from all different parts of the political spectrum. They’re usually in the minorities compared to the leading parties numbers
A: important because it limits scrutiny because they all have different views and so it’s difficult for them to come up with an agreement on what they’ll vote for
they’ll need to work together to have a chance which is unlikely
E: voting and debating is never effective because the leading party usually has a huge majority anyway
they also have the whip system so they make their MPs vote for them through that.
