What benefit comes to a missionary when he preaches the gospel?

When missionaries save a soul, they save their own.


Why did Thomas B. Marsh leave the Church?

Thomas Marsh decided to stand by his wife’s character after she was accused of not sharing the cream from her cow after his agreed to not do so.


How was Elder Marsh a physician to the Church?

Elder Marsh was a healer of the soul.


What is said in D&C 30 that helps to explain Oliver Cowdery's position as "second elder" of the Church?

D&C 30:7 it is written that there is none appointed over Oliver except Joseph Smith


How was David restricted by the Lord?

David was told to stay at this father’s house until the Lord called him.


What journey was Peter Whitmer Jr. to take with Oliver Cowdery?

They were to go on a journey to preach to the Laminates, and build up the church among them.


Why did the Lord scold David Whitmer? On what principle?

David had his mind on the things of the world and not the Lord, he didn’t listen to the spirit.


If you had been asked in September 1830 to predict areas of future problems for Thomas B. Marsh, what would they be? Why?

Thomas had many afflictions because of his family, he was promised his family would be blessed if he went out and shared the gospel. So his family was already a problem, his wife became a huge problem.


What was the basic message to John Whitmer in D&C 30?

He was to stay around the area of his brother’s home and preach the gospel, not fearing man.


Explain verse 32:4.

Verse 4 tells us that we need to listen and pay attention to the words written by the prophets today. And if we pray about these revelations then he will reveal to us more. The scriptures are the standards to live our lives by.


What prompted this revelation?

They wanted to know more about taking the gospel to the Lamanites.


What covenant did they make?

They covenanted that they will assist Oliver Cowdery faithfully in this thing by giving heed unto all his words and advice, which [are], or shall be given him by the spirit of truth, ever praying with all prayer and supplication for our and his prosperity and our deliverance from bonds and imprisonments and whatsoever may come upon us, with all patience and faith.


Who were the first missionaries called to preach the gospel to the descendants of Lehi in this dispensation?



What of great significance to the Church resulted from the missionary journey to the descendants of Lehi, apart from any success among these descendants themselves?

It was the beginning of bring the gospel to all of the other laminates in the world. They also established 2 future headquarters of the church: Kirkland, Ohio and Independence, Missouri.


What is the meaning of "discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart"?

God knows who is pure in heart, he will judge us not only for our actions but for our motives.


What is meant by the "last time" or "the eleventh hour"?

We are in the “Saturday night” of time; that the time of Christ’s return is coming quickly. Those who labored faithfully in this will be rewarded equally to those from previous dispensations.


What is the gospel?

The gospel is repentance, baptism for the remission of sin, then the gift of the Holy Ghost and to have faith in Christ.


What is meant when the Lord says we need to be ready for the coming of the Bridegroom?

The Bridegroom is Christ and we are the ‘party’ that needs to be ready for his arrival. To do this we need to watch and pray – we need quiet, steady attention to present duties, to make the gospel the center of our lives.


What is the symbolism of "out of the wilderness"?

This is referring to calling the gospel back to the earth – the Restoration of the Church upon the earth.


What is the significance of "more blessed" in verse 5?

Because Orson Pratt believe in Christ he was blessed, but because he was called to preach and answered the called to do so the Lord would be blessing him even more.


What is unusual about D&C 34:9?

It describes the wonders in the sky when the second coming occurs, and it is important enough that the Lord mentions them in 3 other places.


What important dimension does this section add to the generally understood and oft-quoted truth, "God so loved the world that he gave his only Begotten Son"? How does that apply to us?

We are on the earth to learn from the example of our Heavenly Father and his son – who both GAVE. We too can give, and we need to choose unselfishly.

Orson was 19 years old.


Why should there be any sick or blind or deaf or lame people in the Church? (See verses 8–11.)

Suffering can make saints of people as they learn patience, long-suffering, and self-mastery. The sufferings of our Savior were part of his education.

Joseph - The keys of the mystery of those things which have been sealed, even things which were from the foundation of the world, and the things which shall come from this time until the time of my coming.


What gift did Sidney Rigdon?

Sidney - Thou art blessed, for thou shalt do great things. Behold thou wast sent forth, even as John, to prepare the way before me, and before Elijah which should come, and thou knewest it not.


What "scriptures" are referred to in 35:20?

Joseph was doing the a new translation of the Bible.


How was Joseph Smith blessed in his weakness?

Joseph’s weakness was that he was unlearned, because of that weakness people couldn’t say that he made up what he wrote.


"Behold, thou wast sent forth, even as John" (verse 35:4). Explain.

Sidney was teaching many different congregations when the missionaries came to teach them the gospel. All most all of the members were baptized. Sidney was preparing them.


Jesus was "crucified for the sins of the world, even as many as will believe on my name." Was he not crucified for others as well? Explain.

Christ was crucified for all the world – we will all have to pay the price if we don’t repent in this life, we will have to suffer like he did if we don’t repent.


Who are the "weak," "unlearned," and "despised" of the world? What are they to do? How?

But I also must have faith, as he also says that those who are weak he will strengthen, and that the weak things of the earth shall rise and go forth and break down the mighty and the strong,


Why did Edward Partridge come to see Joseph Smith in New York?

The people in Kirkland sent Edward to see the prophet because they knew that Edward would not be fooled. He would then return to Kirkland to tell them of the truthfulness of what he had learned.


What is the principle illustrated in the following passage: "I will lay my hand upon you by the hand of my servant Sidney Rigdon" (36 2)?

Sidney was acting with authority (the priesthood) of god on earth, as if Christ was doing it himself.
