Self-determination Theory Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the two types of motivation?
• Intrinsic
• Extrinsic
What are the three psychological needs?
• Competence
• Autonomy
• Relatedness
What is competence?
• To experience mastery
• To produce desired outcomes
• We are more likely to play sports we’re good at because we enjoy competence
What is autonomy?
• Self-determination
• Control outcomes and behaviours
What is relatedness?
• Strive to relate to, and care for, others
• To feel others relate to oneself
What are the two aspects of rewards?
• Informational - related to the need for competence (tells us we’re good)
• Controlling - related to the need for autonomy or self-determination
What are the four types of motivation on the self-determination continuum (in order of increasing autonomy)?
• External
• Introjected
• Identified
• Intrinsic
What is external regulation?
• Behaviour controlled by external factors (e.g. rewards, fear of punishment, coercion)
What is introjected regulation?
• The person ‘takes in’ a value but does not accept it as their own
• Internal pressures to act (avoidance of guilt/shame)
• “I have to…”
What is identified regulation?
• Behaviour emanates from the self
• The person accepts responsibility for doing the activity
• “I value its benefits”
Give examples of controlling behaviours
• Rewards (sometimes)
• Negative conditional regard (the withholding of attention and affection when desired attributes and behaviours are not displayed)
• Intimidation
• Excessive personal control
• Judging and devaluing
