Questionnaires
a written set of questions used to investigate the way people think and feel about a particular topic.
2 types of questionaire styles
Open and closed
Advantages of open questions
- More detail allowing more accurate results
- doesnt force participants to give a particular response
Disadvantage of open questions
- may be misinterpreted
- time consuming to complete by the participants and for the researcher was

- tendencies of people picking the middle options, toning down not trying to sound extreme

Advantages of questionnaires
Confidentiality must be upheld
Collect larger amounts of data by sending out to participants
Participants can take more time to consider responses
Quick to complete (involving more closed questionaires)
Disadvantage of questionnaires
Less detail
People misinterpret questions therefore can be inaccurate
May not return questionnaires creating a low response rate
Advantage of interviews
More personal gaining more detail by asking follow up questionnaires to elaborate
Disadvantage of interviews
Feeling under pressure not much comfortability
May not receive full answers to questions
Time consuming
Problem with leading questions effecting validity
How can it be fixed
Participants aren’t expressing genuine views instead they are expressing the views they feel led towards
Avoid asking questions of this kind deliberately non leading
Problems with social desirable answers?

Participants aren’t expressing their genuine views instead choosing what makes them look best
Guarantee the participants anonymity
Problems of structures interviews donating forced choice questions where participates choose one item from limited range? Problems
Again not expressing genuine views instead choosing an answer closest to their genuine views ( may not be close at all)
