What is a questionnaire?
A pre-set list of questions/items to which a participant responds to
What is an open question in a questionnaire?
Doesn’t have a fixed range of answers and respondents are free to answer any way they wish
What is a closed question in a questionnaire?
Has a fixed range of answers and respondents must choose one to respond with

Will lose detail obtained from open questions

May lead to subjectivity as researcher must interpret answers
Strengths of Questionnaires
Can be given to large groups easily
- increases generalisability of the findings
Cost effective
Can be completed without researcher being present
Limitations of Questionnaires
Participants may succumb to social desirability
- decreases validity of data
Response bias
- participants may skim through the questionnaire and not answer it fully
Leading questions may influence participants into choosing a certain answer
What is an interview?
When a participant is asked questions and the interview either writes the answer down or records the interview to transcribe later
What are the features of a structured interview?
- Fixed, predetermined questions
- Easy to replicate
What are the features of an unstructured interview?
- No set questions and participant is given the opportunity to raise whatever topics they feel are relevant
- Qualitative data is likely to be collected
- Difficult to replicate
