this made laws that segregated African americans permitted as long as equal facilities were provided for them
What is de facto segregation?
segregation by custom and tradition (segregation by choice)

a form of protest that attempted to desegregate restaurants by sitting at a lunch counter and refusing to leave until they got the service they desired.

what is a filibuster?
this occurs when a small group of senators take turns speaking and refuse to stop the debate and allow a bill to come to vote
what is a cloture?
a motion that cuts off debate and forces a vote
What did the Civil Rights Act of 1964 do?
gave the federal government broad power to prevent racial discrimination in a number of areas
what did the voting rights act of 1965 do?
authorized the US attorney general to send federal examiners to register qualified voters. Also suspended literacy tests
