Who was Franz Fanon and when did he write “Concerning Violence”?
He was a French West Indian political philosopher and wrote “Concerning Violence) in 1961 by drawing on his experiences about Algerian violence against the French
What did Franz Fanon saw violence was like under colonialism?
It was imposed by the coloniser as a tool of domination, control, and exploitation -> this was systematic and enforced by soldiers and police to keep the natives in order
What was violence like AFTER colonialism?
Was used by the colonised as reclaiming self-respect, means of liberation and was unifying -> was deemed necessary to overturn colonial structures, not perpetuate them
What did Fanon argue colonialism do to colonial societies?
It deeply distorted them (economically, social, and psychologically) -> due to the implementation of racial hierarchies, broke apart traditional structure, and instilled feelings of inferiority in the colonised
What happened to colonised countries after formal independence according to Fanon?
They had economic dependent, social fragmentation, and weakened institutions due to colonial powers withdrawing with our reparations and left behind structures designed for exploitation -> left the risk that the same inequalities and oppressions would occur under new leadership
When was “The Manifesto of the 343” issued and how did it reframe the debate over abortion in France?
April 5th 1971 -> argued that women were a producer and a producer should be able to control their production (like firms do under a capitalist regime)
What did “The Manifesto of the 343” say the French government chose over women?
Stated they chose an unborn foetus over a human being that is female and that the French would kill them off anyway at 18 (age of conscription)
What does “We are more than 343 sluts” assume people are?
Opposed to racism and colonialism as it reframes the controversial relationship between French and Arab men not as racist or exploitative but as a complex site of mutual oppression, solidarity and subversion
In “We are more than 343 sluts” why does it suggest Arab men are dominant partners over French men?
Due it being a symbolic reversal of colonial power
