Senses Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are receptors?
Special cells in animals that collect information about their surroundings and detect changes in the environment.
What are photoreceptors?
Receptors that detect changes in light.
What are thermoreceptors?
Receptors that detect changes in temperature.
What is a stimulus?
Any factor that activates a receptor and brings about a response.
Give an example of a stimulus and response.
Touching a hot object activates a heat stimulus, causing the body to jerk the hand away quickly.
What sensations does the skin respond to?
Touch, pain, and temperature.
What is the dermis?
The bottom layer of skin that contains many nerve endings detecting heat, cold, pressure, and pain.
What is habituation?
When receptors get used to a stimulus, such as swimming in cold water.
What are chemoreceptors?
Chemical receptors located in our nostrils that detect chemicals in the air.
What do taste buds contain?
Chemical receptors (chemoreceptors) that react to chemicals in food.
What is the role of the ear?
The ear is responsible for hearing and balance.
What do photoreceptor cells in the retina do?
Transform light into nerve signals for the brain.
What do rods do?
Responsible for light and dark changes, shape, and movement.
What do cones do?
Responsible for color.
What is color blindness?
A condition where people either can’t see some colors or see them differently than others.
