Stimulus Response Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is a stimulus?
any factor that activates a receptor and brings out a response
What detects the stimulus?
Receptor
Example: Thermoreceptor in skin
What carries the message to the CNS?
Sensory neuron
What interprets the message in the nervous system?
Co-Ordinator (CNS - brain or spinal cord)
Example: Spinal cord
What carries the message away from the CNS?
Motor neuron
What carries out the action in a reflex?
Effector
Example: Muscles in arm
What is the response in a reflex action?
What happens as a result of the message
Example: Moves away from hot surface
What are reflexes?
A rapid response that protects our body from danger
How does a reflex occur?
It occurs when the body reacts quickly without waiting for instructions from the brain
What happens to the message in a reflex action?
The message is sent to the spinal cord and acted on immediately
Fill in the blank: The sensory neuron carries the message to the _______.
CNS
Fill in the blank: The effector in a reflex action carries out the _______.
action
What is an example of a reflex action when touching something hot?
Remove hand
What is the stimulus in the example of touching something hot?
Heat
What are thermoreceptors?
Receptors in the skin that detect heat
What is the knee jerk reaction an example of?
Reflex action
What reflex is commonly observed in babies?
The Startle reflex
What is the role of motor neurons in reflex actions?
To carry messages away from the CNS
What is the role of sensory neurons in reflex actions?
To carry messages to the CNS
