Separating Mixtures Flashcards
(12 cards)
Which process of separation is used to separate an insoluble solid and a liquid?
Filtration
Which methods of separation are used to separate a soluble solid dissolved in a solvent if you want the solid?
Evaporation and Crystallization
Chromatography is used to separate what?
Soluble solids dissolved in a solvent
Two miscible liquids ( liquids that mix ) are separated by what?
Fractional distillation.
A separating funnel is used to separate…
Two immiscible liquids ( liquids that do not mix )
During filtration the liquid that passes through the filter paper is called the … and the solid that remains on the filter paper is called the …
Filtrate and Residue
True or false:
Crystallization and evaporation are the same thing?
False, crystallization, unlike evaporation allows some of the solvent to be boiled of to create a saturated solution and then is left to cool so crystals form
What is a saturated solution?
A saturated solution is a solution in which no more solute can dissolve at that temperature
What is a solute?
The substance dissolved in the solvent
What is a solvent?
The liquid in which a solute is dissolved in to create a solution
What is simple distillation?
The separation of a solvent from a solution for example sea water and pure water. It uses their different boiling points to separate them. When the first on boils it is condensed in a condenser and you have the solvent.
What is fractional distillation?
Fractional distillation is like simple distillation however it is used to separate two miscible liquids like alcohol and water. The apparatus is similar to that if simple distillation however it requires a fractionating column to separate the liquids.
