Seperating Mixtures Flashcards
(18 cards)
Residue -
the substance left in the filter paper after the filtration process has occured. This substance is susually insoluble solid.
Filtrate
- the substance that flows through the filter paper and into the conical flask. The filtrate is usually a liquid and may contain soluble solids.
Bolling Point
- the temperature at which all of the substance changes state from a liquid to a gas.
Distillation -
a separation technique that separates substances based on the fact that all substances have different boiling points.
Miscibility
- how well substances mix together.
Chromoatography
-a separation technique that is used to separate miscible liquids from each other.
Chromatogram
- a visual pattern formed by the separation of a mixture onto another material like filter paper.
Mixture
: two or more different substances physically combined;the physical change is easily reversible.
I these are our separating techniques
What are the 3 types of mixtures
• A mixture of different elements
• A mixture of different elements and compounds
• A mixture of different compounds
What is decanting
Decanting is a technique also known as pouring.
When is decanting is it used
It is often used when you have a liquid and an insoluble solid.
How is the way decanting works
For this to work, the insoluble solid needs to have a higher density that it will stay in the container.
What is the method of decanting
The liquid is carefully poured off and the solid is left in the original container.
True or false is decanting accurate
False :decanting is not very accurate
What is filtration
Filtration is a technique using to separate insoluble solids from a liquid.
How is filter paper used in filtration
Filter paper is used in a funnel which has tiny holes to all the liquid through but not the insoluble solid which is left in the filter paper. This is called residue.
What happens to the residue after it is filtered
The residue can be air dried to remove excess liquid.
What is the liquid in a chronicle flask called
the filtrate.
