The Cell & Microscope Flashcards
(22 cards)
Organism
: a living thing. Eg. Plants and animals
Unicellular Organism
: a living organism made up of one cell only.
Multicellular Organism
: living organisms that consist of many cells specialised to carry out different functions.
Cell
: smallest working unit of a living thing.
Tissue:
a group of cells of the same type working together for the same function.
Organ
: a group of tissues working together to carry out the same function.
Organ System
: a group of organs working together to carry out a function.
Stem Cell
: a single cell that can replicate itself or differentiate into many cell types.
Specialised cells
: cells that have a specific role to perform. Eg.
Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body.
Specimen
: a sample of cells taken for examination using the microscope.
How do you remember the characteristics of living things

Growth
Respiration
Excretion
Nutrition
Cell membrane -
• controls what enters s leaves the ull
Mitochondria
- Where Respiration happens. Respiration releases energy from food
Cytoplasms
- cell Reactions take place
Supports tiny all structures → called cell organenes
Nucleus
Control centre of the cell contains the genes
Cell wall
- provides strength & support to
the cell
Chloroplast
- photosynthesis takes place here.
• Contains chlorophyll - gives plants their green colour
Vacuole
- stores food
- always present in plant cells. Sometimes found in animal cells.
What found in the plant cell that isn’t in the animal cell
Cell wall
Chloroplasts
Vacuole
