Sepsis Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is sepsis?
A life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to an infection
What are the four different types of shock?
Cardiogenic, hypovolaemic, distributive, obstructive
What can you define as septic shock?
Persistent hypotension - systolic less than 90 even after fluid
Why does sepsis cause hypotension?
It causes blood vessels to dilate and decreases vascular resistance.
Which of the following best describes the role of cytokines in sepsis?
They promote vasodilation and increase vascular permeability.
In sepsis, what is the primary cause of organ dysfunction?
Decreased oxygen delivery due to hypoperfusion
How does the body respond to hypotension seen in sepsis?
By increasing fluid retention through hormonal changes
Which of the following best describes the “cytokine storm” observed in sepsis?
Overwhelming release of inflammatory mediators that can cause tissue damage
How do you recognise sepsis?
Hypotension, tachycardia, tachypnoea, confusion
What does high levels of lactate indicate?
Anaerobic metabolism and tissue hypoxia
What are vasopressors?
Medications that constrict blood vessels to increase BP
What is the main nursing goal when caring for a patient with sepsis?
To maintain adequate oxygenation and perfusion
