What is the connection between Genre and and the contents of a text?
- Every text has a social purpose
- Within every genre, there are typicall elements (obligatory and optional) organized in a particular order to fulfill that purpose.
How is the Register connected to the contents of the text?
- Register is about the context of the situation the text occurs in.
- Every text is about a topic (the field), for a particular audience (the tenor) and in a format (the mode).
Which questions does the Field of the Register concern?
- What are the main topics in your text?
- Who are the main actors?
- What are the main things happening?
- What are your key vocabulary?
Which questions does the Tenor of the Register concern?
- Who is your audience?
- What is your (the authors) relationship to the audience?
Which questions does the Mode of the Register concern?
- What is the form of your text?
- Written or spoken?
- Dialogue or monologue?
- Length?
- Planned or spontaneous.
How are Genre, Register and the Language Features of a text connected?
What are the metafunctions of language? (What does language allow us to do?)
- Experiential metafunction (It allows us to talk about things and experiences)
- Interpersonal metafunction (It allows us to interact with other people)
- Textual metafunction (It allows us to organize ideas and present them in an organized manner)
Why do Genre and Register matter for Advanced B?
Every analysis needs an interpretation and most interpretations connect back to either the genre or the register.
