Intramuscular injections:

  • involve injecting medications into deep muscle tissues
  • muscle is less sensitive to irritating or viscous medication s
  • IM injections are administered with the needle inserted at a 90-degree angle
  • this route provides faster medication absorption than sub cut, because of the greater vascularity of muscle
  • there is less danger of causing tissue damage when medication enter deep muscle

  • smaller volumes are recommended for elderly or fragile individuals or those with less developed muscle mass
  • the sites chosen are areas where there is a minimal risk of the needle penetrating a large blood vessel, nerve or bone

  • Ventrogluteal - gluteus Medius muscle
  • Deltoid muscle - located at the upper out aspect (middle third) of the upper arm
