Session 7 Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
What is the function of the basal ganglia?
A
Facilitate appropriate movements (direct pathway)
Inhibit inappropriate movements (indirect pathway)
After receiving a “motor plan” from the motor cortex
2
Q
What are the different methods of treatment for Parkinson’s?
A
Give extra dopamine to act on the putamen
Lesion the subthalamic nucleus surgically to reduce thalamic inhibition hence increasing cortical excitation
3
Q
What is the pathogenesis of ballismus and how does a patient present?
A
Reduced activity in the subthalamic nucleus leading to increased cortical stimulation
Presents with ballistic, large involuntary movements
