Describe the structure of the NHS:

A

Secretary of State for Health
NHS England - gives money to GPs, dentists, specialist services (otherwise GPs giving money to themselves and couldn’t be objective)
Four regional hubs
50 local offices of the board
240 CCGs - give money to secondary care, e.g. Hospitals, mental care units, community care services.

A

What is the ‘national tariff’?

A

The amount of money that is paid by the government to providers for a procedure. It is the same no matter what provider.

What is the advantage of the national tariff?

A

Providers compete which each other over quality not price. This forces providers to improve their services so that they are chosen by the CCG.

What is the role of a clinical director?

A

Oversees a directorate - a speciality or groups of specialities e.g women’s health, cardiology
Role includes:
- provide continuing medical training and education
- Design and implement policies on junior doctors hours of work, supervision, tasks and responsibilities.
- induction of doctors
- implement clinical audit
- develop management guidelines and protocols for clinical procedures

A

Commissioners act as customers and buy services in the aim of increasing competition and driving up the quality of healthcare services. They also act on behalf of the patients and decide what services are required.
