Who was the Kaiser?
The Emperor of Germany. Wilhelm II abdicated in 1918, leading to the Weimar Republic.
What was the Final Solution?
The Nazi plan to exterminate the Jews of Europe; implemented during WWII, resulting in the Holocaust.
What was the Reich Church?
A Nazi-run Protestant church designed to promote Nazi ideology through religion.
What was Dachau?
The first Nazi concentration camp, opened in 1933. Used to imprison political opponents.
What does ‘Third Reich’ mean?
The name the Nazis gave to their regime (1933–1945), the ‘Third’ great German Empire.
What is an Aryan?
According to the Nazis, a racially pure German person of superior race.
What was the Reich Chamber of Culture?
A Nazi institution that controlled music, art, literature, and film to reflect Nazi ideals.
What was the Concordat?
A 1933 agreement between the Nazis and the Catholic Church to stay out of each other’s affairs.

Hitler’s autobiography, written in prison. Describes his ideology, including anti-Semitism and Lebensraum.

A crisis after the 1929 crash. Over 6 million were jobless; the Nazis promised jobs.
What was the SS?
The Schutzstaffel. Elite Nazi group that ran concentration camps and enforced Nazi rule.
What was the SA?
The Sturmabteilung. Nazi paramilitary group used to intimidate opponents. Purged in 1934.
What was the Gestapo?
The Nazi secret police. Spied on and arrested enemies of the state.
What are real wages?
Wages adjusted for inflation. Nazi workers had fewer rights and low real income.
Who were the Communists (KPD)?
A left-wing party supporting workers’ revolution. Blamed for Reichstag Fire and banned by Nazis.
What is a Putsch?
An armed uprising. The Munich Putsch was Hitler’s failed attempt to seize power in 1923.
What is a Chancellor?
The head of the German government. Hitler was appointed Chancellor in January 1933.
What does persecution mean?
Hostile treatment of people based on race or beliefs. Nazis persecuted Jews, Roma, disabled people, etc.
What was the Reichstag?
The German Parliament building. Burned down in 1933 and blamed on Communists.
What is a police state?
A country where the government uses surveillance, fear, and repression to control people.
What is antisemitism?
Hatred of Jews. A core part of Nazi beliefs.
Who were minorities under the Nazis?
Jews, Roma, disabled people, homosexuals. Targeted for persecution.
What is propaganda?
Media used to control public opinion and promote Nazi ideas.
What was the Depression?
The global economic crash after 1929. Led to unemployment and support for extremist parties.
