Q

distant savage lair from which the wind was rushing was the sea

A

chapter 1

  • ‘savage’ untamed, wild, angry, the sea was violent and angry which could foreshadow Magwitch’s arrival
  • ‘lair’ villain’s base, arguably childish description which is fitting as Pip was young at this time and this is how he viewed the world

Q

as if some goblin had been crying there all night

A

chapter 3

  • ‘goblin’ gothic imagery, melodramatic and shows Pip’s emotions were heightened at the time due to the guilt he felt for stealing the food and file in the first place. goblins are thought to be malevolent to people so Pip’s vision of a goblin suggests he was scared and the goblin was there for him
  • ‘crying all night’ shows the weather was wet and rainy but adding the description of the goblin suggests that the rainy weather is pathetic fallacy and may lead to something more ominous
