What year did Oliner and Oliner conduct their study?
1998
What did Oliner and Oliner(1998) find?
Compared non-jewish WWII survivors, comparing those who resisted orders with those who conformed to them, finding that the “rescuers” were more likely to have a high internal locus of control than the obeyers.
What year did Spector do his study on LOC?
1983
What did Spector (1983) find?
Found that individuals with a high internal LOC were less likely to conform than people with External BUT only in situations of NSI, if it was ISI, both groups conformed the same.
What is the authoritarian personality?
The authoritarian personality is a dispositional factor that effects obedience, making an individual more likely to obey. If a person has this personality they will be dismissive to their inferiors, and submissive to their superiors.
What did adorno (1950) do?
Adorno (1950) made the F-Scale, a 30 question questionnaire that measured if an individual had an authoritarian personality.
How was Adornos F-Scale applied to Milgram?
Milgram and Elms (1966) took 20 450 Volt’ers, and 20 Non conformists and gave them the F-Scale. They found that the indivudials who confirmed were more likely to score higher of F scale than those who didnt.
Support for F-Scale and Authoritarian Personality:
Milgram and Elms (1966)
Negatives of F-Scale and Authoritarian Personality
Response Bias/Social Desirability - Questionnaire means that P’s can answer to what they believe is socially correct, rather than their personal beliefs.
Cannot explain obedience on a mass scale - eg Nazi Germany, all of the Germans had varying personality, therefore they cannot ALL be authoritarian.
Only correlational - only making inferences between authoritarian and obedience levels without any kind of data to ``1
