What is the purpose of signalling on the railway?
To ensure the safe running of trains and to ensure there is a safe distance between trains.
What two signalling systems are on FGW network?
TCB - colour light
Absolute block - semaphor
How does the signaller monitor trains on AB system?
By using block instruments and also bell/ buzzer codes between boxes!
How does the signaller monitor trains on TCB system?
On a light panel. When a train passes through each section it is indicated on the panel with red lights

What is the purpose of an IBS and how can you identify a IBH signal?
They allow you to split a absolute block section so you can run more trains. The sign is a white rectangle with a thick black line through the centre
What does the term service braking distance mean?
The distance it takes your traction to stop. The distance from your 1st caution to your stop signal!

What does the term permissive working mean and how is entry to a permissive working section signalled??
Permissive working allows two trains to be in a section at one time for shunting purposes. This is done via position lights of calling on signal
