What does Guru mean?
It means teacher
What does Sikh mean?
It means learner
Who was Guru Nanak?
He was the founder of Sikhi, and the first of the ten gurus
What were the three most important teachings of Guru Nanak?
Nam Simran - pray to God
Kirt Karo - work to make an honest living
Wand Chako - give to the poor whatever you can spare, and treat people equally.
Who was Guru Gobind Singh?
He was the last of the ten gurus
What is the story of how the Khalsa was formed?
Members of Sikhism were being persecuted and killed.
Guru Gobind Singh asked the Sikhs who was willing to sacrifice their lives for their religion.
One by one, 5 men came up and presented themselves. One by one, Guru Gobind Singh led them into a tent where they were supposedly killed. All the other Sikhs were confused and scared.
After the 5th one was ‘killed’, all 5 men came out of the tent, alive, wearing new clothes and dressed in a completely different way.
Guru Gobind Singh said they would be known as the Beloved Five, and were now part of the Khalsa.
What are the 5 K’s?
Kesh = this means that Sikh men cannot cut their hair. Sikhs cover their hair with a turban, so it is clean and manageable.
Kanga = A wooden comb to keep their long hair clean
Kara = a steel bracelet or bangle around their right wrist
Kachera = cotton underwear/shorts. They were made so soldiers could move around freely.
Kirpan = this was a sword/dagger
What is the Guru Granth Sahib?
It is the Sikh holy book
What is the langar?
It is where you can eat vegetarian food no matter what your religion, ethnicity or gender.
What is sewa?
It means selfless service. It is an important part of devotion and worship to their God.
What are the three types of sewa?
Tan, which means physical work and giving time to help others.
Man, which is mental skills and talents used to help others.
Dhan, which is helping others through offering money and charity.
What do Sikhs believe God is?
They believe that God is the Real Guru.
