Simple machines Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the load?
ouput force of a machine
What is a lever?
a beam that pivots around a fulcrum to help move a load.
What is the fulcrum?
point around which a lever pivots
What is an inclined plane?
angeled surface used to reduce the effort needed to move a load up or down to a height by using less effort. Less effort more distance.
What is a wedge?
two inclined planes joined back to back, used to separate objects or hold an object in place. More effort less distance.
What is a screw?
cylindrical wedge with an inclined plane wrapped around it, used to move or fasten objects. Less effort more turns.
What is a wheel and axle?
a larger diameter wheel attached to a smaller diameter cylinder. The rotation of one is transferred to the other. Less effort more distance.
What is a pulley?
a wheel and axle with a rope running around a groove in the wheel, used to reduce the input effort or change the direction of a force.
What is the sakia?
has a series of buckets attached to a long rope, which is draped over a large wheel. Animals such as a donkey, camel or cow turned the wheel.
What is the Archimedes?
it has a large screw inside a tube. One end of the top is placed in water. When the screw turns, it moves the water.
