What is the principal of single line working with a token?
The principal of single line working is that only one train is allowed to enter one section of track at a time
What is Electric Token Working?
Token working between two signal boxes.
The signaller releases the token from the machine electronically. The signal boxes communicate via buzzer codes
Helps overcome the limitations of staff working
What is No Signaller Token Working?
The same concept as electric token working but using a central signaller controlling the entrance and exit of the section. Driver requests a token from a token instrument and carry as authority
What is Tokenless Block Working?
No tokens are used. Signaller A and signaller B communicate via buzzer codes.
Section is protected by signals with interlock provided between the two signal boxes
What does RETB stand for?
Radio Electric Token Block
How does Radio Electric Token Block work?
Using an additional train cab unit
Train stops at stop board A
Driver calls signaller to request a single line token
If section is clear a token code will be issued and appear on the cab unit
The driver must confirm they have received the token, authority given
Once clear of the section the driver contacts the signaller via cab unit to give up token
What does SIMBIDS stand for?
Simplified bi-directional signalling

What should you consider before entering a single line working with a token section
Make sure you collect the right token for the section you’re entering
Where there is a no-signaller token instrument provided what must you do
You must ask the signaller or authorised person to release the token
What are the 5 reasons do you not need to have the token or train staff when working a single line?
M - Modified working is in operation
A - Your train is entering the single line section as an Assisting train
P - The line is under Possession
P - Working by Pilot is in operation
S - You’re authorised to pass the section signal on an electric token line at danger for Shunting

If the token has been given to the shunter for shunting purposes, you must not continue with the journey until
Shunting is completed
The points have been locked in the correct position for trains to pass
The shunter has returned the token to you
When the train had reached the end of the token section, you must………
Put the token back and inform the signaller
Or
Give the token to the signaller or authorised person detailed in the sectional appendix
Or
Where a no-signaller token instrument is provided, place the token in the instrument or give token to authorised person to do this
If your train fails and an assisting train has to enter the section from a ground frame which is released by a token. What will the signaller instruct you to do
Take the token to the ground frame
When at a token operated ground frame meeting an assisting train, what must you do
Contact the signaller
Not place the token in the instrument
Come to a clear understanding with the signaller about what is to be done
Hand the token to the driver of the assisting train
What must you do if any portion of your train is left in the single line section
Tell the signaller before leaving the section
Keep the token until the whole train is clear of the single line section
If you’re told that because of a failure of token instruments, trains will run as if on a one train working line where a train staff is provided you must
Handle the token as if it is a train staff
Not place the token in any instrument
On a no-signaller token line, when can you pass a token from train to train
When a train is to enter the section to assist, from the front, a portion of a train which has been left in the section
Your told that due to token instrument failure the single line section will be worked as a one train working line with train staff
You must not enter or foul the single line section until the controlling signal is cleared unless……
