What does GSM-R stand for?
Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘tick’ button?
ACCEPT
Used to answer calls and accept user entries on the display.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘cross’ button?
REJECT or CANCEL
Used to reject or delete entries on the display or to end a call.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘MU’ button?
MENU
Provides access to the in-built menu.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘phonebook’ button?
TOC PHONEBOOK
Provides access to the train operator’s phonebook.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘SG’ button?
STANDING AT SIGNAL
Used to inform the signaller that the train is at a stand at a stop signal.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘ST’ button?
ST
Used to acknowledge to the signaller that a broadcast has been received and understood. Also to confirm your train is at a stand after a REC has been recieved.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘plus’ button?
INCREASE BRIGHTNESS / SCROLL RIGHT
Increases the brightness of the display or used to scroll to the right when the text on the screen is longer than 20 characters.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘minus’ button?
REDUCE BRIGHTNESS / SCROLL LEFT
Reduces the brightness of the display or used to scroll to the left when the text on the screen is longer than 20 characters.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘up arrow’ button?
UP WITHIN MENU / INCREASE VOLUME
Used to scroll up through the screen or menu options or to increase the volume.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘down arrow’ button?
DOWN WITHIN MENU / DECREASE VOLUME
Used to scroll downwards through the screen or menu options or reduce the volume.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘left/right arrow’ button?
REGISTRATION / TURN ON
Enables registration and de-registration of the train radio. Turns driver’s control panel on when pressed for 2 seconds.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘1 between handsets’ button?
CALL SIGNALLER
To make a non-urgent call to the signaller.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘big red train’ button?
RAILWAY EMERGENCY GROUP CALL (REC)
Used to make a railway emergency group call.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘yellow SIG’ button?
URGENT CALL
Used to make an urgent call to the signaller.
Where can a list of wild card numbers for the GSMR be found?

Where do you get your location code for the GSMR from?
Use the last 3 digits from the starting signal or wildcard from sectional appendix 99x (EMRs wildcard is 997)
How do you get your registration code for GSMR?
Head code + location code (last 3 digits from controlling signal) = registration code
What is an Alias plate?
Where there is no signal or if there is confusion over what location number to enter an Alias plate will be provided to register the GSMR.
What instructions may you be given during GSMR radio network failure?
To not exceed 100mph and 60mph through effected area.
When can you use the GSMR while the train is in motion?
When passing a message regarding immediate movement of the train that can’t wait till the next stop.
Responding to a “contact signaller” or “contact control” message
In any emergency
What happens when you receive a REC GSMR call?
Audible Warning
Visual Warning
Bring the train to a stand
Confirm stopped with ST button
Listen & understand REC
Call will end ‘end of railway emergency group call’
Proceed at caution to next signal unless instructed otherwise.
On the GSMR what is the function of the ‘T’ button?
TEST
Used to test the train radio
