Q

These sinkholes form as a result of a lack of groundcover, such as vegetation, over the bedrock. Water enters the bedrock through pre-existing holes and begins to circulate through it

Q

It is the most dangerous type of sinkhole because they usually occur where the bedrock is covered by a layer of clay. Underneath that clay, water dissolves an underground cavity and then the ground sediments begin to erode into the cavity from the bottom and it continues to disintegrate from beneath, resulting in forming just a thin layer between the surface and the underground cavity. If that thin layer collapses a sinkhole will open up and swallow anything and everything on top of it.

Q

are man-made sinkholes that can commonly occur in urban areas. These sinkholes can happen because of mining, drilling, weight changes, increase in waterflow, construction activities and groundwater pumping. The more water appearing in the system can dissolve and create an underground cavern, or there’s already an underground opening present.

Q

These sinkholes begin with something permeable enclosing the sinkhole and containing a significant amount of sand. This material begins to spill - or spall, as the technical terminology calls it - into the bedrock caves. A surface depression may form over time. This material can clog the caverns and prevent water from flowing.
