Sitting Posture Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the three types of sitting posture?
Active erect sitting, relaxed erect sitting, and slouched sitting
What is the goal of sitting?
Minimize energy and minimize stress on the body
Describe the LOG in active erect sitting.
Through line of axis of joints and posterior to hip
Which muscles are active in active erect sitting?
Multifidus, T/S erector spinae, and internal obliques
How does interdiscal pressure change in active erect sitting posture compared to standing posture?
Increase interdiscal pressure due to co-contraction of flexors and extensors
Which type of posture has the least muscle activity?
Relaxed sitting posture
Describe pressure and tension in relaxed sitting posture.
Moderate interdiscal pressure and tension on the posterior annulus
What type of sitting posture is affected by the flexion relaxation phenomenon?
Relaxed sitting posture
What type of posture has the most interdiscal pressure?
Slumped sitting posture
Describe tension in slumped sitting posture.
Most tension on the posterior annulus and tension on the posterior ligaments
What type of sitting posture increases forward head posture?
Slumped sitting posture
What type of sitting posture is bad for someone with herniated discs?
Slumped sitting posture (flexion)
What effects does sitting posture have on lumbar support?
Increased lordosis, increased anterior tilt, decreased paraspinal activity, and decreased disc pressure
What are four factors that decrease lumbar IV disc pressure?
- Lumbar support - 5cm from back of seat
- Reclining backrest 110-130*
- Seat pan - posterior 5*
- Use of arm rests
Know the correct sitting posture at a desk.
See slide
What is the best focal vision for a computer screen?
18-28 inches away and angled 15-20* below line of sight
What angle should the elbows and hips be in for workstation sitting posture?
90*
Describe the LOG in relaxed sitting posture.
Falls through the external meatus, anterior to acromion, anterior to axis of rotation in spine, and hip joint
