Situational variables affecting obedience Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the three situational variables affecting obedience
Proximity
Location
Uniform
What was the obedience rate for proximity when the learner was in the room?
40%
What was the obedience rate when the instructions from the researcher were given over the phone?
20.5%
What was the obedience rate when the researcher wasn’t wearing uniform?
20%
What key study is associate with situational variables affecting obedience?
Milgram (1963)
Outline the study very briefly.
- Rigged ‘teacher’ + ‘learner’ study on word association however confederate would always get the learner and participant would always get the teacher.
- Teachers were instructed to administer shocks of 15v per incorrect answer (increasing by 15v each time)
- 15 v to 450 v
- when approaching higher voltages the ‘learner’ would show signs of distress and if the teacher wished to stop or hesitated prompting phrases such as ‘you must continue ‘ or ‘It is essential to the experiment that you continue and ‘ you have no choice but to continue
What were the findings from this study?
100% gave shocks up to 300v
12.5% stopped at 300 v
65% continued to the fatal 450 v
What was the sample of participants?
40 US males
How was this sample collected?
Volunteer
What type of study was this?
A controlled observation
