Q

What are our bones made of? What are their functions?

A

Our bones are made of 75% compact bone and 25% spongy bone.
The function of the compact bone is to provide strength, organ protection and act as attachment sites for tendon to attach to muscle.
Our spongy bone has 2 functions, it has a large surface area for mineral exchange, and it also maintains muscular strength

Q

Why is remodeling important??

A

It is important due to several reasons, it helps to remove old bone that may have become too brittle or fragile, it helps to repair bone that have been exposed to repeated stresses, lastly, removes calcium and phosphorus from the bone in case the diet is insufficient of it or during lactation and pregnancy.

Q

How are our shapes and size of bone shaped?

A

It is genetically determined. However, it is greatly affected by loading or impact from physical activity. The bone fits with its function. Wolff’s law mentions that bone that has been exposed to stresses will lay down more bone tissue to increase the density of that area. Hence the same goes to a sedentary lifestyle, bone loses minerals and loses density.
