Q

Explain in all detail how the skeletal system provides protection for the body?

A

Bones in the body protect fragile organs such as:
Cranium - brain
Vertebra - Spine
Ribs - Lungs
Sternum - Heart
Pelvis - Reproductive Organs

Q

Explain how the skeletal system provides movement?

A

Bones are connected to muscles via joints therefore enabling movement

Q

Explain how the skeletal system helps with blood cell production?

A

At the ends of bones is bone marrow where red blood cells are produced and with an increased number of red blood cells then more oxygen can bind with haemoglobin in the red blood cells therefore providing muscles with more oxygen

Q

Explain how the skeletal system helps with mineral storage?

A

Minerals transform bones from spongy matrixes to rigid structures through the stores of calcium and magnesium and the bones also dissolve these minerals into the bloodstream to provide other bones with minerals

Q

Explain how the skeletal system provides shape and posture…

A

The skeletal system holds the body upright as the bones act as framework

Q

Give a sporting example to why blood cell production is beneficial to a sports player…

A

With increased blood cell production more oxygen can bind to haemoglobin to form oxyhaemoglobin therefore a marathon runners muscles have more oxygen so can perform aerobically for longer without tiring

Q

Give a sporting example of why protection from the skeletal system is beneficial…

A

For example:
A divers cranium protects their brain when entering at high impacts into the pool head first by taking the impact off of the brain

Q

Explain why mineral storage is beneficial for a sports person…

A

With increased mineral storage bones become more rigid and therefore can withstand more impact so in boxing when punching with a lot of power the bones in their hand wont break due to the density of their bones.
