Q

What are the main changes in sleep during adolescence

A

Circadian rhythm is shifted to later
Their sleep pressure is slower - peak tiredness is later on at night

16
Q

Explain the psychosocial pressures of the perfect storm model

A

Bedtime autonomy
Screen time
Academic pressure

17
Q

What are the circadian rhythm developtmental changes?

A
18
Q

What are some consequences of short and ill times sleep?

A

Bad for :
physical health (impacts metabolism so obesity, diabetes, cravings..)
mental health (anxiety depression)
safety (eg on the road)
cognition and academic performance

19
Q

What was learned form Lo et al (2017) experiment on the cognitive effects of bad sleep?

A

Short and ill timed sleep is accumulative and doesnt return to baseline with a weekend “catch up” , not enough to recuperate. Experiment was clear evidence on the longstanding and accumulative effects of lack of sleep
The articfically curtailed weekday sleep for participants were designed to deprive them of the REM rich final hours of sleep – REM sleep is very important for emotion regulation

20
Q

Adolescents with later circadian preference have a range of poorer outcomes such as

A

Daytime sleepiness,
Attention difficulties
More injuries and getting emotionally upset
Caffeiner to try to deal with it but its not healthy
